Cycling route National Landscape Noardlike Fryske Wâlden
Cycling through an intimate bocage landscape of open grasslands, wooded banks, alder hedgerows, coppice woodlands, ponds, and ancient pingo remnants.

The Landscape
The National Landscape Noardlike Fryske Wâlden is one of the finest examples of a small scale cultural landscape in the Netherlands. It is characterized by narrow strip fields and a dense network of alder hedgerows, earth banks, small woodlands, and coppice forests. Shallow depressions, ponds, and ancient pingoruins, which are remnants of Ice Age permafrost formations, add to the scenery and give this region of Friesland its distinctive character.
The present day landscape was shaped during the Middle Ages and has remained remarkably well preserved ever since. Meadows, historic farmsteads, livestock ponds, and tree lined fields reflect the close relationship between agriculture, nature, and centuries of traditional land use. As a result, the Noardlike Fryske Wâlden is regarded as one of the most distinctive historic cultural landscapes in the Netherlands.
What You’ll Discover Along the Way
Around Harkema, you ride through a characteristic bocage landscape, where alder hedgerows and wooded banks create a sheltered, intimate setting. On the higher sandy soils, lighter open stretches and patches of heath appear, breaking up the greenery. This variation gives the ride a natural flow, with birdsong accompanying you along woodland edges and hedgerows.
Between Harkema and the surrounding villages lie long, narrow plots of grassland and arable fields, bordered by ditches and green banks. You ride along quiet country lanes past farmsteads and traditional planting, with views that suddenly open up when a wooded bank breaks. This stretch clearly shows how agriculture and landscape have shaped the scenery together for generations.
In the lower-lying areas, the landscape shifts into a wet mosaic of reed fringes, waterlogged grasslands, and alder carr woodlands along the ditches. Remnants of peat and a high groundwater table keep the soil moist for long periods, creating clear transitions from dry sandy ground to wet nature along the way. This is the quiet stretch of the route, where you often encounter dragonflies and waterfowl.
Here, water is small-scale yet ever-present, appearing as small hollows, ponds, and little pools that glint among the greenery. Many of these water features originate from pingo remnants, creating striking reflections and lively shorelines. This gives the route a fresh accent throughout, without the enclosed woodland landscape losing its charm.
