Cycling route North Limburg between Peel and Maas
Cycling through a diverse natural landscape with country estates, historic peat pits, forests, heathlands and tranquil ponds.

The Landscape
North Limburg is a region full of contrasts, where quiet nature reserves blend seamlessly into open farmland. Forests, heathlands and ponds alternate with fertile fields and green stream valleys, creating a new view around almost every bend. In the early twentieth century, the rugged Peel region was reclaimed on a large scale for agriculture and forestry, a transformation that gave the landscape its present day mosaic character. Venray developed into an important agricultural municipality while remaining remarkably rich in forests, making it ideal for long cycling routes through nature.
History also lies close beneath the surface here, giving the route an extra layer of meaning. The Battle of Overloon became the only tank battle fought on Dutch territory during the Allied liberation in 1944, and Oorlogsmuseum Overloon still reflects that intense period of history. A unique feature is the cycling bridge that allows you to ride straight through the museum during opening hours, as if cycling through a living story. Near Ysselsteyn lies the world’s largest German military cemetery, where more than 31,700 soldiers rest in an impressive memorial landscape that invites silence and reflection.
What You’ll Discover Along the Way
Between Venray, Overloon and Ysselsteyn, you cycle through wide coniferous forests and peaceful heathlands with long, relaxing stretches. Open sandy areas, ponds and ancient drifting dunes create a natural variety that continues to surprise you along the way.
Along the route lie country estates and characteristic farmhouses that give the landscape a timeless appearance. Small villages, roadside chapels and green farmyards add to the atmosphere, allowing you to experience North Limburg in a peaceful and authentic way.
Where the forest opens up, a landscape of fields and meadows unfolds with wide panoramic views and a calm rhythm. Hedgerows and tree lines bring structure to the open countryside, giving the route just the right balance of shelter and variety.
Streams and waterways guide you through the low lying landscape, bringing a fresh and lively atmosphere to the surroundings. With reed beds, gentle banks and the sounds of birds all around, you experience how water and sandy soils together have shaped the character of this region.
