North Limburg between Peel and Maas
Cycling through a diverse landscape of country estates, old peat pits, forests, heathlands, and fens.

The Landscape
In North Limburg, you'll find a beautiful landscape rich in diversity and heritage. Expansive nature reserves, fertile farmlands, and picturesque river and stream valleys follow one another in a natural and harmonious rhythm. Every kilometer brings a new view to enjoy. In the early 20th century, large parts of the wild Peel region were cultivated for agriculture and forestry, a transformation that forever changed the area. Today, Venray is not only an important agricultural region, but also one of the most wooded municipalities in the Netherlands. To the east, the River Maas and drifting sand dunes form a natural border, a stunning backdrop for anyone who loves the outdoors.
In this region, you can still find tangible traces of the Second World War. The Battle of Overloon went down in history as the only tank battle fought on Dutch soil during the Allied liberation in 1944. Part of the former battlefield is now home to the Overloon War Museum. A unique feature: during opening hours, you can cycle straight through the museum via a special bike bridge, an extraordinary way to experience history up close. Not far from Ysselsteyn lies the largest German military cemetery in the world. On an impressive site covering 28 hectares, more than 31,700 mostly German soldiers are laid to rest. It is a place for reflection and remembrance.
