Cycling route Vecht Valley and Archemerberg
Cycling through a rustic natural landscape with shady forests, blooming heathlands, drifting sands, stately country estates, and a beautifully winding river.

The Landscape
Around the Hanseatic town of Ommen, the Overijsselse Vecht winds peacefully through a landscape shaped by the river itself. Over the centuries, the water carved out a broad valley with old river channels, flower rich hay meadows, forest edges, elevated fields, and hedgerows that together create the characteristic Vecht valley landscape. Along the banks lie small fens, floodplain forests, and quiet pools, while cows graze lazily in the surrounding meadows. In spring, the hay meadows turn yellow with marsh marigolds and cuckoo flowers, while in summer water lilies drift across the calmest stretches of water.
On the higher sandy grounds, the scenery changes as forests, heathlands, and drifting sands alternate throughout the landscape. Here and there, centuries old farmyards appear, sheltered among trees and hedgerows. Between Ommen and Lemele, the Archemerberg gradually rises from the landscape, a glacial ridge full of relief and character. At 78 metres high, it brings short climbs, quiet pine forests, juniper bushes, and open heathlands that can glow purple in late summer. From the summit, you look out across a patchwork of fields, country estates, forest edges, and the winding Vecht, with traces of the Ice Age and ancient routes making the story of this landscape almost tangible.
What You’ll Discover Along the Way
Around Ommen, quiet forest stretches and open heathlands alternate throughout the landscape, with broad sandy paths taking you close to nature. Near the Sahara, a local drifting sand reserve near Ommen, windswept dunes, pine fringes, and deep silence briefly create the feeling of being far away from the Netherlands. Between pine and oak trees, sweeping views and open vistas appear along the route, while in late summer the heath gives the landscape a deep purple glow.
In the Vecht valley, you cycle past open farmlands with meadows, hedgerows, and fields that give the landscape a calm and steady rhythm. Farmhouses, historic farmyards, and long sightlines create that characteristic Overijssel feeling of space and simplicity.
The Vecht forms the common thread of this cycling route, shaping the valley with grasslands, riverbanks, and winding waterways. Along the way, streams, ditches, and pools cross your path, keeping the landscape fresh and full of life.
The Archemerberg adds elevation changes to the route with short climbs and surprising views across the Vecht valley. Below, the landscape feels sheltered and green, while above you experience the openness and relief that make this route so varied.
