Cycling route Schouwen-Duiveland and Kop van Schouwen
Cycle through a coastal landscape of wide beaches, high dunes, quiet polders, winding dikes, vast farmlands and a vibrant tidal area.

The Landscape
Schouwen-Duiveland lets you experience the power of sea and wind within a single route, with high dunes and stretches of beach along the western coast constantly revealing new panoramic views. Further inland, the scenery changes into a calm polder mosaic of dikes, farmlands and straight fields, where the wide open space naturally sets the pace.
Along the eastern side, you experience the rhythm of National Park Oosterschelde, where mudflats and salt marshes rise and fall with the tides and the landscape looks different every hour. Across the island, traces of water and history can be found everywhere, from former tidal creeks that have become nature areas to monumental towns and villages that preserve the distinctive character of Zeeland.
The Kop van Schouwen forms the rugged, green western tip of the island, with the highest dunes in Zeeland and a dune landscape that seems constantly in motion. Behind the dune ridge lie dune valleys and dune forests that provide shelter, while Burgh with its ringfort and Haamstede with its castle and church offer a clear glimpse into the past.
What You’ll Discover Along the Way
In the Boswachterij Westerschouwen, you cycle through a dune forest where pines and deciduous trees provide shelter and the light falls across the path in narrow beams. Towards Haamstede Castle, the greenery gradually opens into more exposed dune landscapes with rugged vegetation and dune valleys that give the route an extra playful character.
Along the Kop van Schouwen, wide beaches and high dunes alternate constantly, with recurring views across the North Sea that create a true coastal atmosphere. In the Zeepeduinen between Burgh-Haamstede and the Meeuwenduinen, you can see how wind and sand continue to shape the landscape, making every view feel slightly different.
As soon as you leave the dune landscape behind, the typical Zeeland polder landscape unfolds, with long straight lines, dikes and quiet roads drawing your gaze far into the distance. Around the Prunje, agriculture and nature merge together, with remnants of tidal creeks and salt grasslands giving the polder a more rugged character.
The Grevelingenmeer brings light and openness to the route, with broad shorelines and long sightlines that change atmosphere with every shift in the clouds. Along the Brouwersdam, you experience the transition from the open salt water of the sea to the more sheltered inland waters, in a landscape where space and tranquillity take centre stage.
