The Landscape

The Betuwe is a charming region in the heart of the Netherlands, well known for its fertile soil and vast orchards. Often called the fruit garden of the Netherlands, it is famous for its endless rows of apple, pear, and cherry trees. In spring, the region transforms into a sea of blossoms, while in summer and early autumn the trees are heavy with ripe fruit. But the Betuwe is more than just orchards, it’s a landscape of winding dikes, historic river villages, lush meadows, and tranquil waterways, making it a perfect escape for cyclists, walkers, and anyone who loves nature and rural charm.

In the heart of this region lies the Tielerwaard, the lowest part of Gelderland, stretching mostly to the south of the Linge River. For centuries, the Linge and the Waal have shaped the landscape. Especially between Gorinchem and Geldermalsen, the Linge reveals its beauty: a gently meandering river that winds like a blue ribbon through the flat land. On both sides, reed beds sway softly in the wind, while the orchards bloom with fragrance from early spring to late summer. It's hard to imagine that this peaceful river was once a wild and turbulent force.
