The Landscape

Cycling through the Land of Cuijk, you'll discover how wonderfully diverse this region is. The landscape offers a unique blend of nature and history: from blooming hawthorn hedges and herb-rich grasslands to ancient forests and purple heather fields. Along the way, you'll encounter countless special spots, each with its own story to tell. And the best part is: here, you can literally follow the footsteps of history, from Roman remains and medieval castles to powerful reminders of World War II.

In the western part of the Land of Cuijk, the River Maas meanders through one of the most remarkable landscapes in the Netherlands: the Maasheggen. This ancient cultural landscape is made up of carefully woven hawthorn hedges that divide the land into small, sheltered fields, creating green walls across the terrain. Between the hedges, you'll find flower-filled meadows, tranquil drinking pools, and old, characterful trees. For centuries, this mosaic of nature and culture has provided a safe haven for people, animals, and plants. It’s no wonder this is the only UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in the Netherlands, a testament to the exceptional value and beauty of this unique area.
