Groene Ster and Friese Wouden
Cycling in a very varied landscape with lakes, reed beds, swamp forests and surprisingly beautiful views.
The Landscape
The eastern region of Leeuwarden offers abundant opportunities for a delightful day out. The landscape boasts beautiful variations, numerous scenic views, and captivating skies that evoke a profound sense of freedom. Once a vast wet delta, the open expanse underwent significant transformations through poldering, embankment, and peat excavation since the Middle Ages. The outcome is a picturesque landscape featuring ponds, alder rows, and hedgerows adorned with blackberry bushes. The diverse elements of grasslands, lakes, marshes, reed fields, and pools have become cherished habitats for a multitude of plants and animals. Interwoven within this landscape is a network of meandering sandy paths and roads, connecting authentic Frisian farmhouses to charming villages and hamlets. It comes as no surprise that the area attracted nobility, who felt comfortable here in the beautifully landscaped estates and manors.
