The Landscape

The Northwest Veluwe stretches inland from the Veluwemeer to Kroondomein Het Loo, revealing a clear transition from high to low. From the forests around Nunspeet, Ermelo and Harderwijk, the landscape gradually descends towards the edges of the Veluwe, where it opens up into a more expansive setting. Here, flower-rich meadows, hedgerows and long, narrow fields set the rhythm, with the shimmering Veluwemeer as a calm counterpoint.

South of the A28, a more rugged natural landscape prevails, with extensive heathland, dense coniferous forests and drifting sands giving the area a wild character. In the sand drifts, the contrast between sun and shade is striking, while estates lie quietly hidden among old avenues, ponds and woodland edges. Clear streams and sprengen bring coolness and movement, adding extra variety to the route between dry sandy soils and water-rich stream valleys.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

Near Harderwijk, you ride straight onto the Veluwe, where coniferous forests, leafy avenues and heathlands alternate naturally. Sandy paths and open clearings create constantly changing views and vistas. This is the Veluwe as you want to experience it: quiet, spacious and green.

In this part of the Veluwe, estates and historic farmsteads are often hidden behind hedgerows and stately beech avenues. You pass historic farmhouses, country houses and small hamlets that give the landscape a distinct cultural-historical character. This adds not only natural beauty to the route, but also depth and a sense of story.

Around Elspeet, Staverden and Vierhouten, a small-scale agricultural landscape unfolds, with meadows, arable fields and old hedgerows surrounded by the extensive forests of the Veluwe. Narrow country lanes and sandy paths connect the farmsteads, offering a rustic picture of traditional rural life where nature and farming remain in balance.

On the Northwest Veluwe, you follow clear-flowing water, with the Leuvenumse Beek and the Molenbeek forming green, winding ribbons through woodland edges and stream valleys. The presence of water adds extra variety to the route, from dry drifting sands to cool, shaded stream landscapes.
