The Landscape

Montferland lies in the east of Gelderland, right on the German border, and feels surprisingly un-Dutch due to its pronounced relief. Instead of endless flat plains, it offers a green landscape of rolling slopes, short climbs and sheltered forest roads. These elevation changes date back to the Ice Age, when glaciers and meltwater pushed up the land to form the Montferland glacial ridge. In and around the Montferlandse Bos, stately beech avenues alternate with oak and pine, while the edges open up into small fields, flower-rich meadows and hedgerows that give the landscape a fine-grained rhythm.

The Bergherbos stretches across the slopes of this glacial ridge, taking you from dense forest compartments to open clearings with views across the farmland. Each season has its own charm: in spring the woods turn fresh green, in summer it stays pleasantly cool beneath the canopy, in autumn it glows in shades of gold and red, and in winter a quiet, almost fairy-tale atmosphere settles over the landscape. Nearby lies ’s-Heerenberg with Kasteel Huis Bergh, adding an extra layer of history and atmosphere to the route.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

In the Bergherbos, you cycle through mixed deciduous and coniferous forest, along quiet avenues and winding forest paths that gently rise and fall. In open clearings and along the forest edges, attractive views appear, with occasional vistas across fields and rolling countryside.

Around ’s-Heerenberg, the estate of Kasteel Huis Bergh forms a striking highlight, with its moat, old avenues and a tangible medieval atmosphere. In the surrounding area, park woodland De Plantage and historic details create a rich blend of natural experience and cultural heritage.

At the foot of the hills lie open fields with grain crops and species-rich margins that give the landscape a light, lively feel. Here you cycle along quiet country roads past hedgerows and farmhouses, with the Bergherbos always as a green backdrop.

Montferland gives you a real sense of elevation thanks to the glacial ridge, creating a pleasant rhythm of climbs and relaxed descents. Viewpoints such as the Hulzenberg lift you above the landscape for a moment before you continue cycling between fields and woodland edges.
