Twente and Twickel
Cycling in a fascinating landscape with gently sloping fields and meadows, forests, ancient oaks, moors and fens.
The Landscape
Twente is blessed with a unique landscape and a special past. Hard to believe, but there was a time when Twente didn't even exist. Millions of years ago this was a sea ruled by whales and sharks. The area has changed over the years. Small fields used to be surrounded by hay meadows, damp heaths, wetlands and fens. Winding streams cut through the land. Now it's a romantic bocage landscape with a patchwork of woods, farmland, babbling brooks and hedgerows. Historic farms with black and white shutters indicate that you have arrived at the largest privately owned country estate in the Netherlands. Twickel Estate, nearly seven centuries old and 4,500 acres. Centrally located amongst forests, nature reserves and farmland, boasts the imposing Twickel Castle with its famous gardens where dozens of orange trees have grown and bloomed for centuries. The landscape of Twente deviates from the typical Dutch scene and that is what makes the area so beautiful.
