The Landscape
The character of the Achterhoek landscape has been shaped by centuries of farming culture and small-scale agriculture. You cycle through a mosaic of historic farmsteads, grasslands, and raised fields, bordered by hedgerows and old trees. Between the open fields, sandy lanes and quiet stream valleys appear, so that every bend reveals a new view.
In Bronckhorst as well, woodlands, small fields, and waterways alternate in rapid succession. Scattered throughout the patchwork landscape are castles, country houses, and estates that give the route a historic atmosphere. Winding brooks, stream valleys, and old watermills show how important water has always been here for both nature and settlement.
