The Landscape

Cycle through the diverse landscape of Northwest Overijssel, where Twente, Salland, and the Vecht valley meet in a natural way. Ancient sandy grounds, wet peat remnants, and river landscapes together create a varied setting in which the region’s geological history remains clearly visible.

The route takes you past the vast raised bog landscape of the Engbertsdijksvenen before gradually climbing towards higher sandy grounds with winding roads. You cycle through a small scale landscape of enclosed farmlands, hedgerows, fields, heathlands, and Saxon farmhouses, before ending in the open river landscape of the Vecht with broad floodplains and peaceful panoramic views.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

Between Vroomshoop and the higher sandy grounds, you cycle past forest edges and heathlands where the scenery remains pleasantly varied throughout the route. Sheltered stretches alternate with open views, ensuring that this part of Twenterand never feels monotonous.

In the open countryside, fields, meadows, and farmyards shape the rhythm of the landscape, while hedgerows maintain its small scale character. Old country roads lead you past characteristic farmhouses and give the route a distinctly rural atmosphere.

The Engbertsdijksvenen introduce a wet and expansive landscape of peat pools and rugged fringes where the wetland atmosphere is immediately noticeable. The contrast with the surrounding drier sandy grounds adds extra variety along the route.

Towards the Vecht valley, the landscape becomes more open as you cycle past waterways and greener areas leading towards the Vecht. Floodplains and peaceful riverbanks provide wide views and occasional glimpses along the water.
