The Holtingerveld is a varied landscape of extensive heathlands, forests, drifting sands and tranquil fens. Around Havelte and Uffelte, the open heathland alternates with wooded areas and small-scale farmland, creating a landscape with constantly changing views. The area also contains traces of a long history of human settlement, including prehistoric burial mounds and ancient field patterns.

The route also takes you through the Colonies of Benevolence, a unique cultural landscape created in the nineteenth century to provide land and work for poor families. Straight roads, agricultural fields, tree-lined avenues and characteristic farmhouses still reflect this remarkable social experiment. Together with the natural landscapes of the Holtingerveld, these historic surroundings create a varied cycling experience where nature and cultural heritage come together.
