Stedendriehoek and IJsselvallei
Cycling in an idyllic dike landscape with stately country estates, grasslands, floodplains and gently sloping fields surrounded by hawthorn hedges and trees.
The Landscape
At the transition between the higher sandy soils of the Veluwe and a winding IJssel, there is a beautiful and varied landscape. Polders, floodplains, dikes, kolks, grasslands, trees and estates are ambassadors for an intimate farm landscape that has had a love-hate relationship with the IJssel since its inception. The river has always been important to this region. In the Middle Ages, there was already a heavy trade traffic on the IJssel to and from Germany and provided wealth for the population living along the river. But because of regular flooding in the Middle Ages, the IJssel was not always friendly. Dikes and mounds were built to protect houses, fields, people and livestock against the rising water. Ultimately, this resulted in a unique and idyllic dike landscape.
