Around Lake Veere
Cycle along a natural shoreline with swaying reeds, salt marsh grasses and shallow creeks, with wide views over a brackish lake filled with salt marshes, sandbanks and tiny islands.

The Landscape
Lake Veere stretches like a long ribbon of water between Walcheren and the islands of North and South Beveland. Once a tidal inlet of the Eastern Scheldt, it became a brackish lake after it was closed off in 1961. Green dikes gradually give way to grasslands and wilder strips of nature, where fresh and salt water meet. Along the shores, grasslands, patches of woodland and reed beds alternate. In several places, natural shorelines have been preserved or restored, creating a rich landscape of salt marshes, creeks and sandbanks that provide important habitats for birds and other wildlife. Scattered across the lake lie dozens of small islands, some open to visitors and others reserved as peaceful sanctuaries for birds.
With a total shoreline of over 55 kilometers, Lake Veere is perfect for a varied and scenic cycling tour. Much of the cycling path runs close to the water's edge, offering continuous views of the shimmering lake. Along the way, you will see sailboats, small motorboats and windsurfers gliding across the surface. The route passes through charming Zeeland villages such as Kamperland, Wolphaartsdijk and Kortgene, each with its own character, harbors and welcoming cafés and restaurants. A true highlight is the historic fortified town of Veere, where cobbled streets, stately facades and old warehouses recall the golden age of the 16th and 17th centuries, when Veere traded with Scotland and far beyond.
