The Landscape

The Vecht Valley in northeastern Overijssel is a characteristic river landscape where the meandering Overijsselse Vecht flows through green meadows and wide floodplains. Along the river, inland dunes, small forests and open grasslands alternate, while quiet country roads reveal the varied scenery around Hardenberg.

Near the historic village green of Rheeze, the wooded inland dunes of the Rheezerbelten add a distinctive character to the route. Gnarled oaks, heathland and shrubs cover the higher sandy soils, while marsh marigolds bloom in the wetter lowlands. Farther from the Overijsselse Vecht, extensive coniferous and deciduous forests, once planted for timber production, now form important nature areas within the Vecht Valley.

What You’ll Discover Along the Way

Around Hardenberg, you cycle through sheltered woodland areas where pines and oaks create a calm, green atmosphere. Open heath edges and sandy paths add variety, with brief views across the drier sandy soils. Gentle curves and subtle transitions give this section a lively feel while remaining relaxed.

In the traditional esdorp villages of the Vecht Valley, you see how centuries of farming and settlement have shaped the landscape. Historic farmhouses, traditional yard planting, and age-old field patterns give the route a distinct regional character. Tree-lined lanes and characteristic farmsteads create a setting where nature and cultural heritage blend naturally.

Along the Vecht, the landscape opens into meadows and fields, with ditches, hedgerows, and farmsteads maintaining a small-scale character. You follow quiet roads with wide views typical of Northeast Overijssel. The mix of open space and green edges makes this section both enjoyable and varied.

The Overijsselse Vecht stays close throughout the route, at times curving broadly along the fields, at others appearing as a glimpse between woodland edges. Former channels, small side waters, and damp meadows make the landscape noticeably greener and cooler. Small bridges and quiet riverbanks offer scenic views across the winding river valley.
