The Landscape
The Vecht Valley in Northeast Overijssel is a classic river landscape where the Overijsselse Vecht meanders gently through wide green fields. Along its banks, floodplains and river dunes alternate with small woodlands and open meadows, creating ever-changing views. Around Hardenberg, nature and regional heritage come together, with quiet country roads and plenty of space for a relaxed ride.
Near the brink village of Rheeze, the Rheezerbelten add distinct character to the route, with elongated, wooded drifting dunes that stand out in this otherwise gentle landscape. On the higher ground, gnarled oaks and scrub create a rugged edge, while in the lower, wetter areas, marsh marigolds bring color to the meadows in spring. Slightly farther from the river, extensive coniferous and deciduous forests, once planted for timber production, now form valuable natural habitats.
